The online world and reminiscing

My first experience online was back in the summer of 1992, when I got my first modem. I hooked up with Compuserve. Back in the days when you had to pay by the hour instead of a flat monthly rate. Needless to say that only lasted a couple of months and it would another five years before I went online again. This time with AOL.

I'm surprised that some people think that facebook was the first internet experience for most people. I think it was AOL etc. The platform was pretty self explanatory. It was a time when was more civility online, mainly because it wasn't as easy to access the internet at the time.

My first "internet" was when I was working for a defense contractor, but my first commercial experience was CompuServe (which I actually still have). I do remember the fees were pretty steep early on. At the time, though, I was a consultant so I took it as business deductions on my taxes. It was a lot politer back then, I think. People didn't rant as much or waste time being anonymously nasty. It's a bigger crowd now, so I suppose that may have something to do with it. And it's cheaper and easier. I don't do Facebook, Instagram or any of that. The less stuff online about me, the better. I like being peacefully unknown.

I was an Internet Virgin until AOL took away my innocence. Those chat rooms were CRAZZZZZZY!

I got an online picture and note from a person I hadn't heard from in about 30 years last week. Back then, he was a real jerk. Now it turns out the guy became a minister working with poor people. Sometimes online can bring surprises that are kind of nice to see.

Well, that's better than the other way around.

I think some of the very wealthy TV ministers are the other way around.
